Thank you Arsehole.

Thank you Arsehole.

Thank you Arsehole! No not you…. My own backside! During a weekly class at the Rainbow Tai Chi Chi Kung School in the UK, Master Choy brought up that we can appreciate our own arsehole. Of course everyone busted out into laughter! Also, because the word arsehole is often associated with being an idiot or jerk. However, the reason why Master Choy brought it up was because in Tai Chi we learn to transform our negatives; our shit, into positives and creatives. Yin balances with Yang to find the Tao. We can even learn to be grateful when something negative happens, in order to transform that situation to become more positive. Everyday our arseholes release shit from our bodies. All the things we eat (and I eat a lot during the day) are being digested and then released. Without our arseholes we probably would have  looked like disfigured elephants on steroids…. So the arsehole is the perfect example of how to get rid of all the shit in your life!

Besides our physical arsehole, we also have an emotional, mental and spiritual arsehole. Did you read that correctly? Yes you did! In the Rainbow Tai Chi Chi Kung School, we focus on the heart, body, mind and spirit education. These four aspects or four bodies of us are interrelated. The heart has everything to do with our emotions. ‘How do we really feel deep inside? What does our hearts tell us?’. The body is about really feeling that you have a body and listening to it. ‘What kind of food does your body like and which not? What is that physical pain telling you?’. Moreover, it’s about learning to become more in tune with your gut instinct. The beautiful mind has its respective place on the third spot. We tend to give the mind so much power and let it control our lives. This aspects is about sharpening and clearing the mind, and learning to use it rather than the other way around. The spiritual aspect is about your true being, the connection to the energy and finding out what your purpose in life is.

So what is your emotional arsehole? It’s a metaphor for releasing your emotional shit. Releasing all the emotions that are affecting your state of being, releasing all the emotions which you are aware of or maybe even not aware of…. During the first workshop I went to, given by my teacher Master Choy, we were sitting in a circle. He asked the group to really feel how everyone was feeling. There was one lady who had a slight depression and was getting a bit emotional. Other people felt her pain and were surfing along. Then Master Choy came to me and asked: ‘Tim how do you really feel inside?’. I said: ‘fine!’ I was dating a lovely girl, almost finished my Master’s degree in Business Administration, had a good job and a nice place to stay (at my parents). He closed his eyes and sat closer and just said: ‘hmm hmm’. Then I shared that my parents had some conflicts sometimes, or that my sister had certain issues, but I was fine…. Again: ‘hmm hmm’. Then he said: ‘so it actually feels as if you are the peacekeeper in the house, that you feel responsible for your parents and sister and therefore never express yourself and avoid tension….

Beep, beep and beep; it felt as if exactly the right buttons on my heart had been pressed and my heart felt completely open. I belief I cried for more than 1 hour that afternoon, but after that release together with the first Tai Chi fundamental exercise ‘Letting Go’ and some other Tai Chi exercises, I felt so light. I felt alive and happy! We went outside for a walk and I saw the trees dancing in the wind, the sun was shining bright as never before and everything looked 10 times more intense and beautiful. As before, I never knew that these emotions were inside me, but they were… Unconsciously I had been running away from them, but when I shat them out, I could enjoy life to the fullest! So even if you are aware of negative emotions, like fear of having not enough money or stress at work (things that  you basically don’t need), you can learn to shit them out, just like your own body does!

Our mental arsehole helps us to release haunting thoughts, but also to let go of old beliefs enforced upon us through social conditioning. All our lives our minds have been exposed to information. At school we learn things, from our parents we learn things and of course from our environment. All this conditioning affects the way we see the world and some things that we have learnt might be wrong. 300 years ago people were absolutely convinced that the earth was flat. Not long ago, lots of Germans considered the Jews as the root of all evil…. One of the biggest revelations for me was that I felt the Chi energy for the first time during Summer School at the Rainbow Tai Chi Chi Kung School. Of course at high school I learnt that scientists like Einstein had proven that everything in the Universe consists of energy. However, I never took it serious and was not aware that I could actually feel the energy and build a relationship with it. Right now, when I share with people that I can feel the energy within and around me, some look at me like: ‘what have you been smoking today?’ Which is perfectly ok, because that’s where they are and that’s how I perceived the world not long ago as well. Now, I have long gone shat out that old belief. I do my best to have an open and humble mind in order to learn new things and critically explore and assess myself whether something might be true or not, without immediately writing something off when it seems to deviate from what I perceive as truth.

The next step is to compost our shit. The first time I arrived at the Rainbow Tai Chi Chi Kung School I came in touch with the compost bin figuratively and literally…. I was given the option to go to the compost toilet and do my thing there. The compost toilet is basically a bucket with sawdust. With some slight hesitation I managed to do it. However, cleaning the bucket full of shit, toilet paper, pee and sawdust took me a little longer. Finally I gathered the courage to grab it, empty it on the bin and cleaning it after. In the end it actually felt quite relieving! Master Choy taught me that just like Mother Earth is transforming shit into something valuable, which is called ‘the black gold’ by organic gardeners, we can also do that. I learnt that we have an inner compost bin where we can compost our shit, our negative emotions. So when we firstly use our emotional arsehole to shit out our negative emotions through the first Tai Chi Fundamental, we can then in the second Tai Chi Fundamental transform that negative emotion and let it bring us to positive and creative solutions! Just like the earth is doing with the composting process. The compost bin even has ‘Thank you Shit’ written on it!

The second Fundamental is about accepting that you have a negative emotion and at the same time seeing the opposite, the positive. Then, by accepting both and bringing them together balance can be found and a third unknown creative possibility arises. To give a personal example; I did some groceries the other day and an older lady was in front of me in the que. I was in a bit of a hurry and that lady was taking ages to get her wallet out and to put all the goods in her back. I almost felt like I was boiling inside, I became restless, was annoyingly looking around and had probably taken out my phone out of my pocket ten times or so. In that moment I internally practiced letting go, to release that frustrated and impatient feeling. Then, through the second Fundamental, I saw and felt that part in me that can also be really patient (which seemed hard to find at first) and compassionate for the fact that she was old and therefore slow. I brought these parts in me together with my eyes closed. I felt much more peaceful and when I opened my eyes I saw that they actually opened up a new till!
